Another round of active weather for the Heartland; wind-blown, warm-up for some

Back-to-back storm systems crossing the central Plains and upper Midwest will result in a protracted period of unsettled weather, which may include heavy rain and severe thunderstorms.  The initial system, traversing the central Plains on Friday, will be in the vicinity of Lake Superior late Saturday.

The trailing storm, about 2 days behind, will chart a similar course.  Five-day rainfall totals should reach 2 to 5 inches or more from the eastern Plains into the Mississippi Valley and the upper Great Lakes region.

Parts of the West will also receive significant precipitation, including high-elevation snow. In contrast, little or no rain will fall in the Southeast and across the southern half of the High Plains.

Warmth will surge into the East in advance of the storms, replacing a previously cool regime, while cool air will overspread the West.
