Blizzard Warnings in the upper Midwest

Across the Corn Belt, Blizzard Warnings are in effect Monday across parts of the upper Midwest due to wind-driven snow showers and very cold conditions. The snowy, windy weather is disrupting travel and increasing livestock stress. Farther east, rain is gradually changing to snow showers in the eastern Corn Belt.

On the Plains, mostly dry weather prevails, although cool, windy weather is affecting many areas. Above normal temperatures are limited to the northern High Plains. The only remaining winter wheat-production areas with a protective snow cover are northwestern Kansas and much of Colorado and Nebraska.

In the South, most areas are experiencing cool, dry weather, although a few rain and snow showers are breaking out in Kentucky.

In the West, warm, dry weather prevails. When precipitation ended a few days ago in California, the average water content of the Sierra Nevada snowpack had built to about 21 inches—about 110 percent of the early-February average and almost three-quarters of the typical accumulation for a full season.
