Nebraska farmer expects near-record corn yields

South-central Nebraska farmer Curt Friesen, like many Midwestern farmers, is anxious to resume harvest after recent rains. And Friesen says there could be some record corn yields in his area.

“We’ve seen some really good yields in the initial fields that we’ve broken into. It looks to me like it’s probably on the higher end,” Friesen says. “Other than the fields that have hail or wind damage, yields are going to be pretty good across the area.”

Friesen says he used considerably less irrigation water this year.

“We had to make a couple of fast circles just to get some fertilizer on,” he says. “Without looking right at my water use (numbers) right now, I’m guessing we put on two to three inches of water. Typically, we’d put on at least eight to ten.”

Friesen says his soybean yields are running about average this year.
