More to China domestic hog losses than just ASF disease
John Deen with the University of Minnesota says there’s no doubt the losses caused by the disease are significant.
“We’re seeing more herds affected that are not being reported. But the other aspect is simply a pessimism in the market that farmers, especially smaller farmers, don’t know when and if the disease will hit them.”
He tells Brownfield smaller producers are liquidating herds, but larger farms are taking steps to improve biosecurity to take advantage of higher hog prices.
