Managing for Profit

Making his own energy

About five years ago, Dodge, Nebraska pork producer Danny Kluthe installed an anaerobic manure digester on his hog farm.  Kluthe says that, in addition to reducing odor, the digester has also made him more energy efficient.  The methane gas captured by the digester produces electricity, which he sells to Nebraska Public Power District.   And Kluthe has recently started compressing the methane and using the natural gas to fuel his pickup and tractors.

(Kluthe is being recognized for this efforts to reduce his farm’s environmental footprint.  His Bacon Hill Farm is one of  four pork farms nationwide to receive the 2013 Pork Industry Environmental Stewards award from the Pork Checkoff.)
