The on-going fight against ketosis
One of the big challenges facing dairy cows is ketosis, a metabolic disease that often occurs when a cow freshens. The stress of calving along with the sudden transition from dry to milk-producer often results in a negative energy balance because the cow can’t eat enough.
Heather White is an Assistant Professor in Dairy Science in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; she is working on better, faster detection of ketosis along with building a herd profile to help the dairy farmer better manage the disease.
