Midday cash livestock markets

Cattle country is quiet with just a few scattered bids noted following a light to moderate trade in most areas yesterday. Southern live trade was mostly $2.00 lower at 115.00. Dressed business in the North ranged from 184.50 to 186.00, down $2.00 from last week. Asking prices are around 118.00 in the South, and 189.00 plus in the North.

Boxed beef cutout values are lower in the morning report. Choice beef is down .68 at 200.63, select is .87 lower at 190.14.

Feeder cattle receipts at the Springfield, Missouri Livestock Marketing Center totaled only 810 head on Wednesday. Compared to last week, steers and heifers trended fully steady. Holsteins were scarce. Demand was moderate to good on a light supply. High temperatures and humidity curtailed the receipts. Feeder steers medium and large 1 weighing 570 pounds brought 149.07 per hundredweight. 636 pound heifers traded at 137.04.

Tama, Iowa slaughter cattle sale had receipts of 803 head on Wednesday. No comparison due to last week’s sale not reported. There was an active trade with good demand. Slaughter steers choice 2-4 traded from117.00 to 121.21 per hundredweight. Slaughter Holstein steers from 109.25 to 111.00. Heifers brought 117.00 to 120.06

Sheep receipts at the Sioux Falls Regional Livestock at Worthing, South Dakota totaled 1340 head on Wednesday. Slaughter lambs were 2.00 to 6.00 lower than last week. Feeder lambs were of different weights than last week. The demand was good for slaughter lambs, feeder lambs and fleshier slaughter ewes. Slaughter lambs wooled and shorn choice and prime 2-3 weighing 136 pounds brought 166.04 per hundredweight. Feeder lambs medium and large 1-2 weighing 60 pounds traded at 229.00 per hundredweight.

Barrows and gilts in the Iowa/Minnesota and Western direct trade areas are not reported due to confidentiality. The IA/MN five day rolling average is 72.20. Nationally the hog market is 1.48 lower at 69.72 weighted average on a carcass basis. Missouri direct base carcass meat price is steady at 66.00. Midwest hogs on a live basis are steady to 2.00 lower from 42.00 to 54.00. Zumbrota, Minnesota and Garnavillo, Iowa markets are closed due to the heat.

The pork carcass cutout value is .67 lower at 88.89 FOB plant.

For the week ending July 16, Iowa barrows and gilts averaged 277.77 pounds, .6 pounds lighter than the week before and .4 pounds heavier than 2015.
