Just 10 percent left to plant

Joe Steinkamp farms in southwest Indiana along the Ohio River.  Because of his location, and challenges with water, there are some years where he doesn’t get started planting until the end of May.

However, this year, that was not the case.  “This year we were able to put in a few hundred acres around the 25th and 26th of April,” he says.  “That corn looks fabulous today.  But the Ohio River continued to give us trials and tribulations and held us out from planting any of our other acres.  But in the last seven days we’ve been able to plant over 70 percent of our crop.  We’re down to the last 10 percent of our soybeans to plant and we have all of our corn in now.”

He tells Brownfield being down to the last 10 percent of the crop to be planted on June 3rd is a good thing on his farm.
