39% of U.S. corn, 38% of soybeans harvested

This year’s U.S. corn harvest remains ahead of average, but recent weather has slowed down soybeans significantly.

As of Sunday, the USDA says 39% of corn is harvested, compared to the five-year average of 35%, with 96% of the crop mature, compared to 91% on average. Harvest is steady to behind in 8 of the top 18 production states. 68% of the crop is in good to excellent condition, steady with a week ago and up 3% from a year ago.

38% of soybeans are harvested, compared to 53% typically this time of year, with 13 of the top 18 production states now behind normal, including Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. 95% of beans are dropping leaves, compared to the usual pace of 92%, and 66% of the crop is rated good to excellent, down 2% from last week, but up 5% from last year.

Winter wheat planting has also been slowed down by weather, with 65% of the crop planted, compared to 67% on average, and 44% emerged, compared to the usual pace of 41%.

49% of U.S. pastures and rangelands are in good to excellent shape, up 1% on the week.

The USDA’s next set of production estimates is out November 8th.
