Anxious for planting season

Without question this winter has been one of the most challenging in recent years.  Mike Earley, director of replicated research for Seed Consultants says the long winter has many farmer anxious about spring planting season.

Heading into planting season – he says lower commodity prices will make it even more important for produces to maximize yield potential.

Another issue plaguing some farmers Early adds, is weed resistance.  “There’s Marestail in a lot of areas, we’re getting Palmer Amaranth, water hemp, and some Giant Rag issues as well,” he says.  “We’re going to have to change the way we’re doing things with weed resistance and get it under control.  The best way to do that is get out early and take care of it.”

Early tells Brownfield that may mean being more aggressive in our weed management programs.  “A lot of people haven’t been wanting to put down a residual herbicide with burndown,” he says.  “But that’s going to become necessary to keep them under control.  Because right now – there are so many things we can’t control with post-application.”

And, good weed management, also means utilizing different products and different modes of action.
