August weather impacting some yields

Harvest is underway for one central Indiana farmer.

George Kakasuleff farms about 30 miles north of Indianapolis.  He says there is concern the hot and dry weather during the month of August would limit yield potential.

So far that’s exactly what they’re seeing.  “We are seeing some yield reduction,” he says.  “I was concerned we might be about 30 bushel below where we were last year on our farm and so far that is what we’re seeing.  The same soil types a year ago are 30 bushel less this year.”

Kakasuleff tells Brownfield moisture percentage is also varying this year.  “We’re in 103 day corn that was planted in the middle of April,” he says.  “We’ve seen moistures down to 14.5% already.  We’ve had loads go in at 16.1% and as high as 21%.”

He says they’ve also seen some disease pressure in fields this year.

As for beans, Kakasuleff says they’ll be ready for harvest in about a week.
