Balancing science and questions

Ahead of the Purdue Ag Alumni Association annual Fish Fry – a panel of experts discussed the importance of finding balance in animal production.

Candace Croney, a Purdue University associate professor of animal science says it is important to balance the science behind animal care with answering the questions that consumers pose.  “What we often times do as scientist is give people so much information that is important to us – but not necessarily important to them,” she says.  “The by the time we’re done with the topic – if someone was even slightly interested they are no longer interested or in a coma because we have bored them senseless.”

Croney tells Brownfield we need to keep these things in mind: What we tell people; How and when we tell them; And actually who tells them.

“It’s important to find neutral avenues to open the doors to public conversations,” she says.  “Then thinking about whose views are important to be represented; clearly we want as broad representation as possible.   Then we need to determine who facilitates that conversation; so everyone feels that they are actually going to be heard.”
