Bode: America’s bioeconomy can strengthen agriculture and national security
The CEO of the Corn Refiners Association sees the ag bioeconomy as an important part of national security.
John Bode says biomanufacturing was recently identified by the U.S. Defense Department as a strategic priority.
“China did that 20 years ago, and China has been building overcapacity in biomanufacturing. That’s because biomanufacturing is important not just for the integrity of our food supply chains, but also bioweapons as well as munitions, things that go boom.”
The Corn Refiners Association supports legislation that would strengthen USDA’s BioPreferred program.
“With corn-based fuels (like) ethanol, it’s really been the tip of the spear. There are hundreds if not thousands of other products in the bioeconomy, and that is the real growth opportunity of American agriculture.”
Brownfield interviewed Bode at the 2026 Farm Progress Show near Boone, Iowa Wednesday.
