A bright spot for pork producers

Emerging markets are a bright spot for America’s pork producers.

National Pork Producers Council CEO Neil Dierks told attendees of the Illinois Pork Producers annual meeting yesterday trade was down slightly in 2013 from years prior.  But, when evaluating those numbers, he said it really was down significantly in the first six months – and has since been making a comeback.

“If you take a look at some of our new Free Trade Agreements, particularly the FTA’s in Panama and Colombia,” he says.  “The amount of product there has been increasing very rapidly – and that gives us more diversification.”

Dierks tells Brownfield the reality is that US pork is the most competitive pork product in the world.  “And we’re looking forward to being more competitive and feeding people high quality protein,” he says.
