Chinese whistle-blower dead

The man who exposed the melamine scandal in China’s dairy industry has died from injuries received in an assault. Xinhua New Agency says 44-year-old Jiang Weisuo was assaulted and critically injured on November 2 after he attended a meeting with his distributors at his dairy company. Police have reportedly detained a suspect but will not disclose any other details.

Jiang exposed the practice of diluting milk and then adding melamine to clear testing in the Chinese dairy industry in 2006. The full scandal broke in 2008 when at least six infants died and tens-of-thousands were made ill by contaminated milk and milk products prompting a world-wide recall of Chinese dairy products.

Jiang started his own dairy in 2008 using goat milk and promising safe products, the company has over 300 franchises across China today.
