Hard work pays off

Dalaney Vickrey shows her Chester White barrow in the Grand Champion Barrow Drive at the Indiana State Fair.It takes a lot of work to prepare an animal, no matter the species, to show at the state fair.

Fifteen year old Cole Wilcox is from Lawrence County and exhibited the Grand Champion Barrow.  He says even though it’s hard work – it is worth it.

“This is the Indiana State Fair,” he says.  “Like he (the judge) said its one of the hardest state fairs in the country to win.  To win this fair is a big deal for me.  It takes a lot of hard work at home, a lot of late nights and early mornings working them, walking them a lot, and getting them ready to show.”

For 12-year old Dalaney Vickrey that hard work includes figuring out how much to feed, how much exercise the hogs need, and to make sure they are kept clean.  “We work them every day,” she says.  “We try to walk them a lot and make sure there isn’t too much fat.  It’s a lot of hard work to do that whole process.”
