Conditions ripe for planting in Minnesota
Conditions are ripe for many Minnesota farmers to begin planting.
University of Minnesota Extension crops educator Dave Nicolai says recent moisture stunted fieldwork.
“But I think that in the next two or three days we’ll see quite a bit more activity, we’re going to get past that crop insurance date for a lot of Minnesota in terms of corn planting. So that will be advantageous.”
He tells Brownfield research shows farmers don’t have to push planting dates too hard.
“You can plant that corn even a little bit later and we’re not necessarily going to get a bit of yield impact by planting that much early, but logistically it helps growers out to be able to spread their workload out.”
Nicolai says the past 90 days have been beneficial to the start of the growing season with above normal temperatures and decent moisture.
