Donnelly Days takes a look at ag research and technology

Indiana Senator Joe Donnelly brought his Donnelly Days to Purdue’s new Indiana Corn and Soybean Innovation Center to learn about ag technology and research.

He says research plays an integral role in helping farmers increase productivity and efficiency.  “I was down in Knox County, near Vincennes the other day where we went through a whole cover crop demonstration,” he says.  “To keep nutrients in the ground and to increase yields and combine those kind of things – those stewardship policies and their used by all farmers across the state.  You combine that with things like drones and better seeds – seeds with better traits – the whole world changes in terms of production and being able to feed the world.”

Karen Plaut, associate dean and director of ag research in Purdue’s College of Ag says investment in research is key.

She tells Brownfield the Senator’s stop was an opportunity to show how much progress can be made on issues important to farmers.  “We have researchers that can go out and determine when is the best time of day to put nitrogen on the field,” she says.  “By using the UAVs and sensors that sense the gas environment we can look at what nitrogen is coming up in the air so we can protect our streams, we can protect our air, and we can make the most money for our farmer.”

Donnelly Days is an ongoing series where the Senator works alongside Hoosiers in a variety of jobs to gain a better understanding of the issues most important to them.
