Down corn means slow harvest in East Central Nebraska

An East Central Nebraska farmer says the finish line for harvest could be a few weeks away.

Chris Clausen tells Brownfield part of his corn crop has stalk integrity issues after a trio of wind storms this summer. “We’re actually putting on our corn reel and I know of several other neighbors are doing the same thing, so that’s going to slow harvest down a little bit for us. And I’m not sure how widespread it was.”

He tells Brownfield damage was extensive in places and likely took the top end yield off. “I’ve got a few fields where we’ve got 5-to-10-acre circles where there’s only 10% standing. Those fields we may lose 10/20/30 bushels. Not sure yet until we get into it.”

Clausen says if the corn crop was not damaged, then it was slightly below average. He says soybean harvest is almost wrapped up and yields were extremely disappointing, averaging anywhere from 15 to 50 bushels per acre.
