E.U. dairy producers protest

More than 2,000 farmers from Belgium, France, Germany, Poland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and other European countries demonstrated at the European Parliament in Brussels on Monday. Coordinated by the European Milk Board the farmers were protesting low milk prices which they say are putting small dairy farmers out of business. The protesters used hundreds of tractors to snarl traffic in Brussels, set bales of hay and tires on fire and sprayed “thousands of liters” of milk on European Parliament buildings.

More protests are planned for Tuesday.

The E.U. is currently working on its next budget amidst a push to reduce spending and reform the Common Agricultural Policy. 40 percent of the E.U. annual budget goes to farm subsidies.

The E.U. is in the process of phasing-out production quotas by 2015.
