The ever-evolving National Farmers Organization

The National Farmers Organization held their annual meeting recently in Nashville, President Paul Olson says attendance was great including a large number of younger members. “That is so refreshing,” says Olson, the organization has added programs aimed at younger members and they are drawing well.

Declining farm prices among the main topics at the convention this year, Olson says while it is frustrating to see this happening; “it is refreshing to see members willing to take ahold and try to do something about it.” NFO offers a variety of tools to help with risk management and marketing.

The group spent a lot of time learning about the provisions of the new Farm Bill including what to consider when selecting the ARC or PLC options.

On the policy front: members support Country of Origin Labeling and oppose the Trans Pacific Partnership currently being negotiated. He says they remain neutral on the GMO labeling issue.

Overall, Olson says the organization continues to evolve from a policy-focused group to more of a marketing and risk management focus. He says they are still one of the most grassroots organizations out there and still represent the family farm…no matter how much that has changed over the years.
