Farm Bill conference in North Dakota

Senate Budget Committee Chair Kent Conrad of North Dakota kicked off a two day Farm Bill conference Monday in Fargo. The Democrat opened the conference by saying “We cannot allow folks in Washington who know nothing about agriculture to continue to portray farm programs as a bad public investment,” while saying that ag programs are NOT the driver of the nation’s deficit problem. A panel discussion was then held by a bipartisan panel of lawmakers.

According to DTN, Conrad stressed that the deficit reduction Super Committee should not write the next farm bill adding they should give the ag committees more time to write a proper bill if the ag committee chairmen and ranking members can’t come up with a plan before the super committee votes November 23rd. December 23rd is the deadline for the House and Senate to vote on the super committee proposal.
