Farm bill funds rolling out for animal disease protections

The USDA says additional funds in the 2018 Farm Bill earmarked to improve livestock disease prevention efforts are being put to work.

Dr. Sarah Tomlinson with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service says the increased funds will focus on three areas, “Animal disease preparedness and response, our national laboratory network capabilities as well as our national animal vaccine and veterinary countermeasures bank,” she says.

This year $10 million will be invested to improve diagnostic methods at USDA’s national network of laboratories and increase disease response training as well as “targeting to invest between $15-30 million.”

Those funds will be used to contract build a foot and mouth vaccine bank.
