Farmer anticipates above-average yields

A southwestern Indiana farmer says his corn and soybean yields are above average but nowhere near the record crop he had last year.

Joe Steinkamp grows soybeans, white corn, and wheat in Vanderburgh County.

“I’d say we’re down 10 percent on corn and about 10 bushels on soybeans off our record,” he says. “Everything is a disappointment the year after you have a record crop but we’re still going to have an above-average crop”

He tells Brownfield warmer conditions helped corn dry down more quickly for harvest.

“We’re harvesting corn right out of the field dry to take it to the elevator …usually we still have some moisture left in our corn at this time,” he says.

Steinkamp says corn harvest is 90 percent complete and soybean harvest is about 50 percent compete.
