Farmers react to Trump announcement on trade with China

President Trump’s announcement on tariffs and Chinese ag purchases has given farmers including Dave Bechel of Elmwood, Wisconsin some hope.  He says, “I’m just hoping that it turns around because some days, I feel like I’m just hanging on by a thread.”

John Krings has farmed all of his life near Plum City, Wisconsin, and he says the impact on commodity prices has a ripple effect.  He tells Brownfield, “I’m also a seed dealer and hey, farmers have got to make money or they can’t pay me for the seed.”

Randy Kuehl from Kewaunee County says the apparent Trump-Xi agreement to negotiate is what farmers need.  “I think they did a good job.  It’s getting worked in the right direction.”

All three say improving trade relations gives them hope that prices for all farm products can improve sooner, and not later.

During the G-20 Summit in Argentina, President Trump announced he will not raise existing tariffs or add new ones on China January 1st, but would hold off for 90 days to allow the two sides to negotiate.  Trump also says China will agree to immediately purchase agricultural products from the U.S. to reduce the trade imbalance.
