Good time to evaluate wheat crop

Laura Lindsey, Extension soybean and small grains specialist at The Ohio State University says here at green-up is a good time to evaluate the wheat crop.

“As far as tiller numbers, we’re looking for about 25 per square foot after green-up,” said Lindsey. “So if it’s below that you’re going to start seeing a yield reduction, but if around that 25 per square foot or greater after green-up you should be fine.”

The small grains specialist says this is also a good time to apply nitrogen to the wheat crop to give it a kick start.
