Groups urge quick action on Korea FTA

An ad hoc coalition of agricultural and food organizations and companies is calling on Congress to approve the Korea Free Trade Agreement as soon as the Obama administration sends it up to Capitol Hill.

A coalition letter, signed by 61 groups (including American Farm Bureau, NCGA, NCBA and NPPC), emphasizes that other countries are moving forward with FTAs with South Korea to the detriment of the United States.  It says the risk for U.S. agriculture is “extremely serious” if the Korea-U.S. FTA is not implemented.

U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk has indicated that the administration is close to sending the Korea FTA to Congress and has requested approval by July 1st, 2011.
