Harvest better than expected so far

Harvest is well underway in Missouri and  Burrus Seed sales agronomist Matt Montgomery says numbers early on have been surprising.  “The early start has been kind of nice,” he says.  “We’ve had some really good numbers that have rolled in.  You’ll hear about some 200 bushel numbers – but there are some fields that are much worse than that.  I feel like the story will change as harvest progresses.”

According to the latest weekly crop report 27 percent of the corn crop is harvested, 70 percent mature and 97 percent of the crop has dented.  Fifty-percent of the crop is rated good to excellent.

Montgomery tells Brownfield much of Missouri battled Mother Nature this year and those challenges are reflected in the soybean crop.  “We aren’t talking about rainfall in inches,” he says. “We’re talking about rainfall in feet and you can imagine the impact from that.  It is going to be dramatic.  We cannot look at that amount of rainfall and not see some direct yield hits and some other agronomic issues pop up.”

Seventeen percent of soybeans have begun dropping leaves and 36 percent of the crop is rated good to excellent.

Harvest continues in some of the other crop – 20 percent of rice and 10 percent of sorghum have been harvested.  Sixty percent of the cotton bolls are opening.
