Harvest delays raise questions about corn, soybean quality

Brownfield's Kellan Heavican interviews Andrew Meng.

A northeast Kansas farmer says the ongoing wet weather is raising concerns about the quality of this year’s crop.

Andrew Meng says corn yields were above average before the rain started. “Any ear that is upright right now is getting water in there and it is sprouting. I don’t know how big of an issue it’s going to be, but the forecast says there is more rain.”

But, he tells Brownfield, “We’ll be pushing the envelope. We’re right there. Honestly, it’s surprised me.  We haven’t been in any soybeans yet, but they should be pretty decent it looks like.”

Meng says the forecast is favorable to get back to harvesting sometime later next week.
