Haunted by Palmer amaranth

The threat of Palmer amaranth getting a foothold in Ohio has put the state on high alert.

In 2013, nine sites around the state reported Palmer amaranth. Mark Loux, Extension weed specialist at Ohio State says those sites are being monitored.

“Well I think everyone is keyed in on it, looking for it and appropriately scared of it, for lack of a better way to say it, and that’s a good place to be,” Loux said.

The amount of Palmer amaranth found last year ranged from a few plants to one site with multiple plants in several fields.

Loux says that if growers take aggressive action, the spread of the weed can be lessened.
