Heavy rains cause corn damage as northwest Missouri harvest resumes

A farmer in northwest Missouri says he’s back harvesting corn after multiple days of heavy rain and there’s been some damage.
“It’s not in every ear for sure, but it’s definitely in every field,” Ryan Meyerkorth tells Brownfield. “Some fields have it in percent, some of it 20 percent. We’re not able to look at all of it yet, but we are finding it everywhere. Right now it’s showing up as a little bit of grain damage, but it’s mostly getting spit out the back of the machine.”
He says the corn is being blended and going into on-farm storage.
“We’re getting after it and trying to get stuff in the bin before there’s more damage,” he says.
Meyerkorth says soybean harvest is getting closer, and there are discolored soybeans. He’s expecting to start soybean harvest early next week.
USDA says half of Missouri’s corn has been harvested as of Sunday, in-line with the average. Twenty-one percent of the state’s soybeans are harvested, ahead of average.
