Midwest rains exceed expectations

An extension agronomist says the latest stretch of wet weather brought more rain than she was anticipating.

Meaghan Anderson with Iowa State University says fields have been soggy in both the Western and Eastern Corn Belts.

“There are some folks in Illinois who were struggling with downed corn after their late storms,” she said. “Indiana got some late rain that maybe slowed things down for some people.”

She tells Brownfield corn and soybean fields are starting to dry out in Iowa.

“For us, it’s remarkable how much of the state is actually affected and how it’s bleeding over state borders.”

Anderson says the rains were so prolonged and widespread that they essentially wiped out drought conditions across a large area of the Midwest.
