IL farmer on ‘crazy’ start to the planting season
A northwest Illinois farmer says it’s been a crazy start to the planting season.
Illinois Corn Growers President Randy DeSutter, in northern Knox County, says they began planting April 6th, “It was 75 degrees. Good weather forecast. And that’s our insurance date when they say you can start planting corn so we planted about 30% of our corn. And, then on Wednesday, the 7th, it just started raining. It was only supposed to rain may an inch!”
He says they got nearly four inches of rain over the next five days, causing a big mess, and it turned colder.
“We’ve got a lot of land along creeks so I’ve been spending a lot of time getting rid of corn stalks that piled up all over the place, not just from our land but our neighbors’.”
Two weeks later, DeSutter says, they got back in the fields and finished Sunday. He started planting soybeans on Monday.
