The importance of Right to Farm legislation

Later this year Right to Farm legislation will appear on the ballot before Missouri voters.  A couple of weeks ago Missouri Senator Mike Parson visited with Indiana legislators to share his experience as Indiana prepared to debate Right to Farm legislation.

Parson told Brownfield that agriculture is Missouri’s number one industry and needs to be protected.  “A lot of people are generations removed from farming now and don’t understand what it takes to feed the states and what it takes to feed the world,” he says.  “It’s an important industry that we’ve got to protect.  The people who sometimes try to attack it – they aren’t really driven by the agriculture industry.”

Indiana state Senator Carlin Yoder tells Brownfield this battle isn’t just happening in Missouri and Indiana.  “It’s vitally important that legislators who believe in agriculture and understand the importance of agriculture band together so that we know what is coming up,” he says.  “Those states that have already been through this fight can educate the other states.”

Last month the Indiana Senate passed week Yoder’s bill and just last week it passed out of the Indiana House Ag Committee and could go before the full House as early as this week.
