Indiana farmer expects early harvest as soybean prospects improve

A southeast Indiana farmer says he expects fall fieldwork to begin before the end of the month.

“It’ll be a week and a half to two weeks before we get started,” he says.

Roger Wenning says he’s optimistic about the 2026 crop.

“The soybeans, we got them all planted in mid-April and they’ve had timely rains this year,” he says. “They’ve never suffered, so I do think we’re going to have pretty good beans. The corn is more average.”

According to the latest USDA crop progress and conditions report, Indiana corn is 95 percent in the dough stage, 68 percent dented, 12 percent mature, and rated 62 percent good to excellent. Soybeans are 23 percent dropping leaves and rated 63 percent good to excellent.
