Injunction lifted on horse processing

Domestic horse processing in the U.S. is a step closer to resuming. Sue Wallis, with the International Equine Business Association, tells Brownfield Ag News an emergency stay was lifted late Friday night by the 10th federal appeals court in Denver, “And so the door IS open and we are presuming that the plants will have FSIS inspectors in the future.”  The appeals court panel ruled animal rights groups had “failed to meet their burden” for continuing an injunction.

A month ago, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) had immediately appealed a judge’s favorable ruling in New Mexico and was granted a temporary emergency injunction continuing to prevent USDA inspection at plants approved for horse slaughter.

Wallis says there a few hurdles left at the state level but those are being resolved. A waste water lagoon permit has just been granted for the plant in New Mexico,“We expect that the same will happen in Missouri. Hopefully, those will be just a matter of days.”

Wallis says we should see horse processing soon at Valley Meat Company in Roswell, New Mexico and Rains Natural Meats in Gallatin, Missouri.

  • I hope this time they get get it fired up. Lots of cold and snow and horses suffering more and more and still a failing market but I will believe it when I see it!!!

  • The cause of justice prevails. Private property rights and economic freedom is what gave Americans the highest per capita income in the world since the 1830’s. A country in poverty becomes the slave of foreign powers. Top-down central planning and control of Hegel, Marx, Stalin and Hitler are proven lackluster economic performers and natural resource mismanagers. We live in the land of plenty and our attitude of abundance makes us the most giving country in the world.

  • NOT GONNA HAPPEN – 80% OF WE THE PEOPLE OPPOSE HORSE SLAUGHTER AND WILL MAKE SURE THAT NOT ONLY NO HORSE SLAUGHTER PLANT WILL OPEN BUT TRANSPORT TO SLAUGHTER IS STOPPED AS WELL – ALSO, SOMETHING THAT THE PRO-SLAUGHTER ADVOCATES FAIL TO MENTION IS THAT THE 2014 FEDERAL BUDGET DEFUNDS THE USDA INSPECTIONS OF HORSE MEAT – WHY WOULD ANYONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WANT TO PAY FOR FOREIGN COUNTRIES APPETITE? – THAT’S WHAT THIS AMOUNTS TO IF THE PLANTS OPEN – THE AMERICAN PEOPLES TAXES PAYING FOR A FOREIGNERS DISGUSTING APPETITE AND GREED!
