Iowa Ag Secretary expects corn planting to begin

Iowa’s ag secretary expects corn planting to start rolling this week.

Mike Naig says with April 10th being the earliest date to plant corn and remain eligible for federal crop insurance, planters will likely be seen throughout the state.

He says a quieter weather pattern and unseasonably warm conditions should also aid progress.

USDA’s latest weekly crop report shows oat planting at 13 percent, one day ahead of last year but one day behind the five-year average.

Pastures are starting to turn green, and calving continues.

Topsoil moisture levels are rated 78 percent adequate to surplus and subsoil moisture is 66 percent adequate to surplus.
