Iowa farmer discusses input costs

Southwest Iowa farmer Justin Ewalt says higher production costs continue to be a challenge.

“The inflation is high and it has been,” he said. “It doesn’t matter whether you are buying a cheeseburger at a local restaurant, or buying oil to change in a tractor, it’s quite a bit higher from what we’ve experienced in the past.”

But he tells Brownfield fertilizer prices are going in the right direction.

“Prices are drastically different than they were a year ago, quite a bit cheaper,” he said. “That’s certainly something to look forward to versus the way we’ve been the last couple of years. Some of those things have been sticker shock to everyone.”

Ewalt says the availability of inputs has improved. He raises corn, soybeans, and cattle in Fremont County.
