Iowa State agronomist cites growing quality issues in wet harvest

An extension agronomist says it’s been a frustrating start to harvest season in Iowa and other parts of the Midwest.

Meaghan Anderson with Iowa State University says the rain just won’t let up.

“Not a lot going on other than catching a few windows here or there,” she said. “Most people have been totally stalled out waiting for dry conditions.”

She tells Brownfield concerns about grain quality are prevalent.

“The corn was not in great shape even around Farm Progress Show time, so early September, and most of that corn has not been taken out of the field.”

Anderson says standability is another issue that many growers are dealing with.

“There’s definitely a lot of corn that has ended up on the ground already or is very close to being there.”

She says there have been reports of mold developing in corn fields.
