Kansas farmer says $6 Diesel is crushing harvest budgets
A central Kansas farmer says record high fuel costs have been depressing this fall.
“At this time, it’s treading water.”
Paul Penner says his expenses have been mounting quickly. “I just filled up last week a diesel tank with farm fuel at $6.09 per gallon. Imagine this, more than 200-gallon tank, that’s $1200. With 8 or 9 fill ups, we’ve exceeded our historical budget.”
He tells Brownfield, “We’ve got multiple tanks to fill up, and harvest beans, plant wheat and also market our crops. It’s going to be an expensive proposition.”
Penner says he’s also concerned about an uptick in fertilizer costs and how everything will impact his bottom line heading into 2027.
