Iowa’s harvest falls further behind

Last week’s wet weather caused Iowa’s corn and soybean harvests to fall even further behind normal.

As of Sunday, only five percent of corn and nine percent of soybeans had been harvested, compared with the five-year averages of 26 for corn and 42 for soybeans.  Corn harvest is three weeks behind the normal pace and the soybean harvest is off to its slowest start in over 30 years.

“The wet weather has resulted in a very slow start to the harvest,” says Iowa secretary of agriculture Bill Northey. “Hopefully dry weather and warmer temperatures will allow fields to dry so farmers can get in the fields soon.”
