Keeping down dust during planting

planting grain sorghum-sorghum checkoff 2015

A believer in cover crops, Mark Kies has been farming for more than 40 years in Hillsdale County, in Southeast Michigan.  He says they prefer to farm using a lot of conservation practices.  “I prefer to do no-till as much as we can, we do some minimum vertical tillage.”  He says, “It just seems to hold the soil.”

Kies says reducing tillage during planting means a lot less dust and maintenance.   “The one thing I do like about no-till is the lack of dust during planting season.”

The farm also uses variable rate technology for soil testing and fertilizer applications.
