Lack of hay making relief efforts difficult

Volunteers are turning to alternative options to feed livestock affected by extreme flooding.

Matt Schaller with the Michigan-based nonprofit Ag Community Relief says from the Great Lakes to Nebraska, extra hay is hard to come by.

“2018 was a real poor hay year and I think we’re finding hay is really hard to come by all over the place.  We haven’t really heard from any one who’s sitting on a large stockpile.”

The group is raising funds to buy range cubes to feed livestock affected by extreme flooding in Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri which Schaller says in some places have to be air dropped in by the National Guard.

“In places that have been cut off, they’ve even been loading feed on National Guard helicopters and getting them out to guys that way because the roads just aren’t accessible by vehicle.”

The groups is currently accepting donations online to support two more relief trips and working with other volunteer groups across the country to support farmers in need.
