Limited fieldwork for Indiana during March

A colder than normal March kept fieldwork to a minimum in Indiana. The USDA says temperatures warmed up gradually after a frigid start to the month, but the monthly average was still four degrees below average, not allowing fields to dry out, even with average precipitation slightly lower than usual, limiting fieldwork to spreading fertilizer and top dressing wheat in frozen fields. Some fields remain flooded, especially in southern areas of the state, but at 52% good to excellent, the winter wheat crop is generally doing well.

Livestock conditions were mostly good, even with muddy conditions in feedlots.

The USDA’s weekly national crop progress and condition reports resume April 1st.
