Mexico’s economy minister says NAFTA deal could be reached soon

Mexico’s economy minister says the U.S., Canada, and Mexico could come to an agreement on the North American Free Trade Agreement soon.

In an interview with Televisa network, he said that there was an 80 percent chance that the countries would reach an agreement in principle in the first week of May.

US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer has said he is hopeful that a NAFTA deal will be reached soon because there is such a short window with upcoming elections- a presidential vote in Mexico in July and the U.S. midterms in November.

Leaders from each country met in Washington last week. Mexico’s economy minister said the trade teams agreed to be in “permanent talks” instead of having a formal eighth round of renegotiations.
