Michigan Master Pork Producer finds value from end to end

A Michigan pork producer says with record-high fertilizer prices manure is showing its true worth.

“That’s shown added value—significantly.”

Rick Sietsema is the CFO for High-Lean Pork which raises 20,000 sows in Michigan and 17,000 in Ontario.  He tells Brownfield it’s also brought increased value to their 60 plus family farm contractors.

“We’ve been contacted by other farmers in the area looking for manure as a resource and that’s a welcome sight to see because it really is a resource,” he says.

Sietsema says after navigating the last two years of the pandemic, he’s looking for every opportunity that exists in a continually volatile market and this year has started with capitalizing on the backend of his pigs.

Sietsema was recently honored by the Michigan Pork Producers Association as this year’s Master Pork Producer.
