Michigan farmers surpassed the five year averages for corn and soybean planting over the weekend.

As of Sunday, corn planting was 87 percent complete, three percent ahead of average. Almost half of the crop has emerged with condition rated 70 percent good to excellent.  Soybeans are 70 percent planted, six percent ahead of average. A third of the crop has emerged, a little behind average.  Winter wheat is 93 percent jointed and 25 percent headed.  Condition remained steady at 77 percent good to excellent.  Oats are 93 percent planted, right on pace with the five year average.

Only one percent of dry beans are planted, but remain on pace with average. Sugarbeets are 84 percent emerged, well ahead of last year and the five year average.  Condition is steady at 78 percent good to excellent.  First cutting of alfalfa is 10 percent complete, 11 percent behind last year.

Cold, wet and windy conditions during pollination in the southwest have some growers expecting smaller sweet and tart cherry crops. Northwest growers have had ideal conditions.  Growers report strong potato emergence in the southwest.  Asparagus harvest continues.
