Milk production up slightly in November

Milk production in the United States in November totaled 16.025 billion pounds up just 0.1 percent from November of 2012. Production per cow increased 2 pounds to 1,742 but the nation’s dairy herd declined slightly to 9.198 million cows.

Milk production in the 23 major dairy states totaled 15 billion pounds in November up 0.3 percent. Nine of the 23 major milk producing states saw a decline in production compared to a year ago. Production per cow in the 23 states averaged 1,762 up 1 from a year ago while the dairy herd added 22,000 head to 8.5 million.

California milk production was up 0.6 percent at 3.28 billion pounds, Wisconsin declined 0.6 percent to 2.2 billion. Idaho declined 1.8 percent to 1.09 billion, New York saw a 2.1 percent increase to 1.08 billion pounds while Pennsylvania slipped 0.2 percent to 845 million.
