Missouri grower on dicamba, weeds and fast growing crops

A southwest Missouri farmer says he decided to grow dicamba-tolerant soybeans this year and so did his neighbors, “We kind of got together and we all decided that that was the route we wanted to go. So, that helps a little bit when you’ve got everybody on board.” Kyle Kirby is quick to say he is following all label restrictions, aware that not everyone is planting Xtend soybeans, “We’ve used some Engenia dicamba already this spring and got along great, haven’t had any issues at all. As fast as these beans are growing, we plant in 15 inch rows here, and we try to get that ground shaded just as quick as we can.”

Kirby says his corn is also growing very fast, offering shade to help choke out weeds before they get a huge foothold. Kirby just finished spraying his corn. “Weeds have REALLY started to bounce. I mean, these waterhemp are relentless any more. They love this 90 degrees and higher humidity so you’ve got to keep on top of ‘em.” Once the corn is tall enough to shade the rows, he tells Brownfield, “You should have the weed thing whipped, pretty much.”
