More rain needed in Indiana

Indiana’s office of the National Ag Statistics Service reports sparse to significant rain over the past week helped crops but more is needed.

The office notes severe weather did down corn in some areas and while ears are dropping, extreme conditions have taken their toll and there’s a wide variability from field to field.

89% of topsoil and 95% of subsoil is short to very short of moisture with some wells reportedly running dry.

73% of corn is rated poor to very poor with none in excellent condition and 53% of beans are in poor to very poor shape with 15% called good to excellent. Additionally, crops are developing much faster than average across most of the state.

89% of pastures are called poor to very poor.

The office does add the past week’s rainfall assisted farmers in working to control spider mites.
